Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS)

The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program is a five-year, incentive-based, voluntary program that assists Section 8 households in achieving economic independence and building assets. A family development professional works closely with the participant as a team to identify family strengths and address any immediate and/or long-term barriers that threaten to impede their success.

Who is Eligible?
Any PGHA Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Section 8 head of household that is motivated to make their dreams a reality leading them towards a change that would positively affect their families and communities, is eligible for the FSS program.

What is the Role of the FSS Coordinator?
In addition to working directly with families on their "Individual Training and Services Plan (ITSP)", FSS Coordinators operate as their advocates within the community, striving to meet the needs of participants. Focusing on participants' identified needs, the FSS Coordinator cultivates viable partnerships with other social service providers in an effort to effectively coordinate services and eliminate any obstacles participants may face.

Program Coordinating Committee (PCC)
The Program Coordinating Committee (PCC) is a group of social service providers and community leaders that are committed to furthering the mission, goals, and objectives of the FSS program and its participants.

Who are some of the PCC Members?

  • Charlotte 2-1-1
  • Charlotte Technical Center

What is the FSS Escrow Account?
PGHA establishes an escrow account for each active FSS participant upon enrollment. Once an eligible participant increases their "earned" income, they also increase their potential of a monthly credit that is deposited into their account. Upon successful completion of the program, the participant receives the money that has been accruing in the account.
